Create More…Consume Less

A wake up call for Creators

I have realised that I spend more time consuming content online than I spend creating content. While consumption is the Norm for most people, and even creators can’t come close to making more content than what is out there…we do have some control about how much content we create vs how much content we consume.

The First step obviously, is to ‘catch’ yourself ‘consuming’ i.e being mindful of the time we spend scrolling, watching and waiting (for stuff to buffer). And if you are not happy with the Create:Consume ratio, then you need to try a few things to take control.

Since most of my ‘creation’ happens on Medium, where a write original articles on various topics that occupy my mind, Medium is my immediate switch from ‘consume to create’. You need to identify where your preferred platform to create so that you have an immediate replacement for consumption. I don’t actually write an article every time that I am on medium, I sometimes jot down writing prompts or just edit existing drafts, and sometime I read an article by someone else, which might prompt some inspiration for me to write. But this is different from ‘mindless consumption’.

Here are 5 Tips;

Set Specific Time Blocks for Consumption:

Designate specific time slots in your day for consuming content. Limit this time, and use it as a reward for completing your creative tasks. This way, you’ll have dedicated periods for both creation and consumption.

Create a Content Calendar:

Plan your content creation in advance by creating a content calendar. Outline topics, deadlines, and milestones. Having a structured plan will keep you on track and reduce the temptation to endlessly browse online content.

Unplug During Creative Sessions:

When you’re in the creative zone, disconnect from distractions. Turn off notifications, put your phone on silent, and focus solely on your creative work. This helps you immerse yourself in the creative process without the constant pull of external content.

Set Clear Goals for Each Session:

Before starting a creative session, set specific goals for what you want to achieve. Whether it’s writing a certain number of words, creating a design draft, or brainstorming ideas, having clear objectives keeps you focused on producing content.

Engage in Offline Activities:

Break the cycle of online consumption by engaging in offline activities that stimulate creativity. Take a walk, visit a local museum, or attend a live performance. These experiences can provide fresh perspectives and inspiration for your own creative endeavors.

So what tips do you have which might help us ‘consume less and create more’.
