PERSPECTIVE: It’s Easier to tell yourself that today is the Last day of a Bad Habit than that it’s the First day of a Good Habit!

‘Trying to STOP’ is a good intention, but what we are doing is ‘Negatively Empowering’ because we are only signaling to our brains (rather trying to con it) is that we are ending something and we do not tell it what we plan to do after that.

I call this the Alcoholic’s Mentality. If you tell an alcoholic to stop drinking for 10 Days he probably will because he knows that he can drink in the 11th Day.

If you are looking to break a bad habit, instead of just telling your Brain that it needs to STOP doing it, you also need to instruct it with a Positive REALISTIC Replacement behaviour.

not just don’t; do as well: image copyright
  • Instead of “this is the last time I’m having Cake for Dessert” say “I am going to start eating a Banana for Dessert”
    * Instead of “today is the last day that I’m going to take the taxi” say “I am going start to walk 1 Bus Halt”
    * Instead of “this is the last night I’m going to have Carbs after 7pm” say “I am going to have start to have Salad after 7pm”

Removing the bad habit is obviously important but we also need to reinforce the good habit as well.
